W. Ivey Gilmore, Jr. is a member of the Alabama Bar Association, the Birmingham Bar Association, the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. His practice areas include civil litigation and trial practice (with an emphasis on insurance defense), general insurance coverage matters, casualty and complex construction litigation. He is admitted to practice in Alabama’s Northern, Middle and Southern District Courts and has practiced occasionally in the State of Mississippi - Pro Hac Vice. Mr. Gilmore has extensive experience representing clients in the construction industry - industrial, commercial and residential. He has represented architects, engineers, general contractors and other trades in the construction field. Mr. Gilmore is peer rated and has received the Martindale-Hubbard AV rating for his extensive litigation skills and experience in and out of the court room.
Mr. Gilmore was born in Eufaula, Alabama, (Barbour County) on April 8, 1969. After serving in the first Gulf War in the Alabama National Guard, he graduated from the University of Alabama in 1993 where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration. Mr. Gilmore worked his way through college while working part-time with Crawford and Company Insurance Adjusters. After graduating from the University of Alabama, Mr. Gilmore was employed by Cincinnati Insurance Company where he served as a Multi-Line Claims Adjuster for various independent agents located in West Alabama.
Mr. Gilmore attended the law school at Birmingham School of Law while working for Cincinnati Insurance. In 1999, he earned his Juris Doctor and was admitted immediately into the Alabama Bar Association. He began his career in Birmingham, Alabama, with the Firm of Burgess & Hale, formally known as Lamar, Burgess, Hale, Miller, Norris & Feldman. As an insurance defense attorney, Mr. Gilmore worked on numerous complex civil cases, participated in several intricate jury trials, and obtained summary judgment in favor of his clients in many other high-exposure cases. Mr. Gilmore returned to Tuscaloosa in 2003 to practice with the law firm of Owens & Millsaps, LLP and obtained partnership in 2006. While practicing at Owens & Millsaps, Mr. Gilmore continued representing individuals, businesses and insurance companies in complex cases and tried multiple high-exposure cases to a jury verdict. In 2010, Mr. Gilmore and Bill Poole co-founded the firm of Gilmore & Poole, L.L.C. which is now Gilmore and Rowley, L.L.C.
As a result of his comprehensive litigation experience, Mr. Gilmore is often invited to speak at the University of Alabama Law School on the subject of automobile litigation at continuing education (“CLE”) seminars. Mr. Gilmore and his wife, Laurie Beth, both serve in the Tuscaloosa community. They have two children, William (3) and Waller (1). He is active in the community as a past board member of the Tuscaloosa Public Library and past administrative board member of the First United Methodist Church.
